Q: How are federal withholding taxes reported and calculated?
A: Scientific Games will report a winner of a Trip Prize and Challenge Cash Prize to the IRS after the event is completed, as required under federal law. For U.S. citizens, the Federal Government requires lottery winnings be reported to the IRS for tax purposes if an individual wins $600 or more, or the winnings are subject to federal income tax withholding (winnings greater than $5,000).
The tax withholding rate for the Trip Prize and the Challenge Cash Prizes is 24% for winnings that are greater than $5,000. If you have questions regarding the tax consequences of winning any Texas Lottery game, including a Promotional Second-Chance Drawing, we recommend that you consult with your own accountant or tax advisor. For prizes with values less than $600 a claim form is not required and the value is not reported to the IRS for tax purposes. These prizes will be immediately fulfilled by the vendor upon receipt of the winners list from the Texas Lottery Commission.
Q: Can I change my mind and turn down the $5 MILLION VEGAS CHALLENGE® Trip Prize?
A: You have the option not to claim the Trip Prize you have won. In that case the Trip Prize will be awarded to an alternate entry. Once you submit a Promotional 2nd Chance Claim Form and it is approved, the Trip Prize is considered to be claimed, and may not be changed or refused after that point, and tax responsibility will be borne by the prize winner.
